The Terracotta Army is the accepted name for the burial of 8100 full-size terracotta statues of Chinese warriors and their horses at the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang in Xi'an.

Construction of the Terracotta Army began in 247 BC, more than 700,000 craftsmen and workers took part in its construction, and it took 38 years to complete, as art historians suggest. Later, a city arose on the site of the grandiose find. Three pavilions protect the terracotta burial army from the weather and vandalism. The excavations of the terracotta massif have lasted for about 40 years, but their end is not expected. Terracotta is yellow or red clay that was fired at a constant temperature of at least 1000 degrees for several days.

Yang Ji Wang the archaeologist found the first, main Qin Shi Huang martial row, which contains approximately 6,000 terracotta figures.

The terracotta warriors were made with great care, probably with astonishing diligence on the part of their creators. It is impossible to find the same faces in the whole entourage, because there are none. The warriors on the retinue not only reflect the diversity of the Chinese empire, but also the Mongols, Uyghurs, Tibetans and many others. The details of clothing and hairstyles correspond to their time. The armor and shoes are reproduced with incredible accuracy. The only difference from the real people is their height. Their height is 1.90 to 1.95 meters. The army of the divine Qin could not have been this tall. The finished sculptures were fired in kilns, with a firing temperature of 1,000 degrees. Afterwards, artists painted them with natural colors. The slightly faded colors can still be seen today. After a few minutes in the air, however, the colors disappear.

Along with the Great Wall of China and the Shaolin Monastery, the Terracotta Army of China is on the list of the most famous sights in the world.

In 1987, at the 11th session of UNESCO, the Terracotta Army was included in the World Heritage List as part of the "Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Shi Huang Dynasty," which was one of the first Chinese sites included in this list.

At EXPO 2017, Kazakhstanis and visitors had the opportunity to see a great work of art: the "Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huangdi". Visitors were shown more than 50 archaeological objects: weapons, tiles, clay statues of warriors, dishes, silver and gold jewelry.

At the book exhibition from the collection of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan are books, illustrations of the history of the "Terracotta Army" as a unique work of art.

We invite everyone to visit the book exhibition!
