In the reading room of periodicals of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan there is an exhibition "Tauelsizdik belesteri" dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Every year on December 16 our country celebrates a national holiday - Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was on this day that the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On State Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan", which formalized the legal status of the Republic as a sovereign state, was adopted.

On December 10, 1991, the Supreme Soviet passed a very important law "On the Change of Name of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic," which renamed to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The country's independence was realized not in declarative, but in real form with the adoption of the Constitutional Law "On State Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan" of 16 December 1991. The Constitutional Law declared Kazakhstan an independent, democratic and legal state possessing full authority on its territory.  The Constitutional Law clearly defined further directions of economic, legal, social - cultural, political development of the republic. This law stated that one of the most important responsibilities of the state was the revival and development of culture, traditions and language, the strengthening of the national dignity of the Kazakh nation and representatives of other nationalities.  The constitutional law has fixed the course of the state on creation of independent economic system with its own financial and credit, tax and customs policy based on the variety of forms of ownership. The economic system approved in the Constitutional Law was strengthened by the creation of financial and credit, tax and customs institutions and by the introduction in 1993 of our own national currency, the tenge, into the economic turnover.

Our republic rapidly, in a fairly short period of time, created all the necessary attributes of statehood. The symbols of the state - state flag, coat of arms, anthem and state awards - were approved. For the first time, a unified Kazakhstani citizenship was established. To protect the independence and territorial integrity of the country, the Constitutional Law provided for the creation of the country's own power structures - the Armed Forces, the Republican Guard, and internal border troops.

Turkey was the first country which recognized Kazakhstan as an independent state.

On March 2, 1992, Kazakhstan was admitted to the UN as a full member.

Over these years we have achieved a lot. First of all, we established ourselves as a state; we created our own political system. We have formed an economic system which is recognized as market economy in the world, we have created a certain social system and we have raised the development of small and medium businesses to a high level. We have filled the ideological vacuum created by the collapse of the USSR - we now have new values and new reference points.

In 2006, on the day of the 20th anniversary of the events of December 1986 the First President N. Nazarbayev opened the monument "Dawn of Independence" (Tauelsizdik tany), which was placed near the Independence Square on Zheltoksan Street. Peace Street in Almaty was renamed into Zheltoksan Street in memory of the tragic events of 1986.

The exhibition features materials, newspapers and magazines from the collection of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
