The author's literary debut was the 1849 drama The Temptation of St. Anthony. It was a work that raised the themes of the possibility of knowledge and truth. The author labored over it for five years. Between 1864 and 1869, Flaubert wrote another major and largely autobiographical novel, The Education of the Senses. In 1872, Flaubert began a long work on a satirical novel about human nature and vanity, Bouvard and Pecuchet. He edited it until his death in 1880. The work was published a year later. At the same time as this novel, Flaubert composed novels: "Herodias," "A Simple Heart," and "The Legend of Saint Julian the Merciful" (1877).

His works "Madame Bovary" and "A Simple Soul" were used in famous films. And music was written for the opera based on the novel "Madame Bovary", "Salammbo" and the story "Herodias".
